Crafts education in Norway

Oslo National Academy of the Arts
Oslo National Academy of the Arts is Norway’s largest college of higher education in the field of arts, with over 550 students, 200 employees and more than 900 guest teachers and teachers on short-term contracts, all of whom are leading practitioners in their own discipline.

Bergen National Academy of the Arts
Bergen National Academy of the Arts (short in Norwegian: KHiB) offers a three year BA and two year MA study programme in the Subject Areas Visual Communication, Furniture- and Spatial Design/Interior Architecture, Photography, Printmaking, Ceramics, Textiles and Visual Arts. KHiB also participates in the national Research Fellowship Programme in the Arts (PhD-level).

International studio programme

Air West Norway
This web-site presents twelve residencies located in the western part of Norway. The residencies vary from retreats in rural districts to town residencies. Some residencies are related to grants, others are simply free-of-charge dwelling and studio.

Office for Contemporary Art
The Office for Contemporary Art Norway is a foundation created by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in autumn 2001 with the aim of strengthening the position of contemporary visual arts and production from Norway and of stimulating and facilitating exchange between Norwegian and international art professionals and institutions.

Res Artis, World Network of Artist Residencies
Res Artis—the worldwide network of residential art programs are an association of over 400 centers, organisations, and individuals in over 50 countries. Each of the members is dedicated to offering artists, curators, and all manner of creative people the essential time and place away from the pressures and habits of every-day life, an experience framed within a unique geographic and cultural context.

Creating Art Value: A Research Project on Trash and Readymades, Art and Ceramics is part of the research programme on Assigning Cultural Values (KULVER), the Research Council of Norway’s programme for cultural research for the period 2008 to 2012.

THINK TANK – A European initiative for the applied arts
THINK TANK was founded in September 2004 in Gmunden, Austria, with the generous support of the City of Gmunden at Lake Traun . THINK TANK is a group of 9 leading thinkers, writers, theorists, curators and makers representing a broad range of European countries. All participants of THINK TANK are deeply engaged with craft and design, through writing, teaching and lecturing.

Museums

The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (Oslo, Norway)
Founded in 1876, The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design was the first of its kind in Europe. In addition to temporary exhibitions, attractions include the permanent exhibitions «Design and Crafts 1905–2005», «STYLE 1100–1905», the costume galleries and the study collections of glass and ceramics.

Permanenten: The West Norway Museum of Decorative Art (Bergen)
The museum presents design and decorative art in untraditional ways. Here you will also find Norway’s largest collection of Chinese art and decorative art, and a separate gallery room devoted to the Singer Collection.

The National Museum of Decorative Arts in Trondheim (Norway)
The museum houses a historical and modern collection that includes furniture, silver, glass, textile, ceramics and design from the 15th. century up till today. The museum’s exhibition of Japanese arts and Crafts is the only of it’s kind in Norway.

SKMU Sørlandets Kunstmuseum
SKMU Sørlandets Kunstmuseum is a young museum, but still one of the largest in Norway, aiming to be a leading space for Norwegian and international art.

The Art Museum of Northern Norway
The Art Museum of Northern Norway was established in 1985 as an independent foundation financed by the Government. In 1988 the museum opened to the public in rented premises.

Galleri FORMAT (Oslo and Bergen, Norway)
The Galleri FORMAT is owned by NK with spaces in both Oslo and Bergen. The galleries are exhibition and sales venues of the finest professional and artistic quality within ceramic, textile, metal, tree, glass and leather.

RAM Galleri (Oslo, Norway)
RAM Gallery was established in 1989, and is run by The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts, The Association of Norwegian Textile Artists and The National Foundation for Art in Public Buildings.

Contemporary Art Centres in Norway
Contemporary Art Centres in Norway is a network organisation of artist run art centres in Norway. These 15 art centres are situated in most of Norway’s counties, and have been professionally run institutions since their establishment during the middle of the 1970s

Akershus Kunstsenter (AKS) (Lillestrøm, Norway)
Akershus Kunstsenter (AKS) is an artist led institution that presents, mediates and debates contemporary art through a programme of exhibitions and specific art activities. The centre is owned and run by BOA and NKSO, the organisations that support professional visual artists and craftspeople in the region.

Hordaland Art Center (Bergen, Norway)
HORDALAND ART CENTRE based in Bergen, Norway was established 1976 as the first artist run art centre in Norway. Its activities are based around the exhibition programme with equal emphasis on seminars, presentations and dialogue. Since 1987 HORDALAND ART CENTRE has hosted a Nordic residency programme, from 2008 also open to international artists, curators, writers and other art professionals.

S12 Galleri og Verksted (Bergen, Norway)
S12 opened on the 16th of May 2007 and is an artist run exhibition space and open access studio for glass and ceramics in the heart of Bergen, Norway.

Gustavsbergs Konsthall (Sweden)
Gustavsbergs Konsthall is Sweden’s only public art gallery specializing in contemporary craft art. The gallery opened in the summer of 2007 and has rapidly established itself as a leading venue for Swedish and international crafts. By showing a broad spectrum of crafts in thematic, groundbreaking and artistically exploratory exhibitions the gallery aims to increase public understanding of contemporary craft art and to promote discussion.

International crafts organizations

The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts (NK)
The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts (NK) is a national organisation for professional practising artists. The organisation was established in 1975 and now comprises approximately 850 members who work within the areas of ceramic, textile, metal, wood, glass, leather crafting and crossover areas.

World Crafts Council (International)
Founded in 1964, the World Crafts Council (WCC) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization. Its purpose is to strengthen the status of crafts as a vital part of cultural and economic life, to promote fellowship among the craftspeople of the world and to offer them encouragement, help and advice. The World Crafts Council is organized into five regions… Africa, Asia (World Crafts Council Asia Pacific Region), Europe (World Crafts Council Europe), Latin America and North America (World Crafts Council North America). Each region has a President and a Vice President. Countries within these regions are members of World Crafts Council as National Entities and represent the craft and crafts persons of their country.

Konsthantverkscentrum (Swedish Crafts Center)
KHVC is the largest crafts organisation in Sweden with around 800 members all over the country. They all keep a high professional profile. The makers either graduated from a university program or passed a jury selection.

Danske Kunsthåndværkere (Danish association for craft artists)

Ornamo (Finnish association for design and applied arts)
The members of Ornamo are professionals in industrial design, fashion, textile and furniture design, interior architecture, craft art and textile art as well as researchers of design. Versatile education and skills obtained in professional life make it possible for the members to work on several areas of design, among which design management is one of the most challenging.

Handverk og Hönnun (Islandic crafts and design institution)
CRAFTS AND DESIGN / HANDVERK OG HÖNNUN is a private non-profit institution established in January 2007. It replaces the project HANDVERK OG HÖNNUN, established in 1994. The institution is operated with financial support from The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in Iceland.

British Crafts Council
The Crafts Council is the UK’s national organisation for the promotion of contemporary crafts. Established in 1971, the British Crafts Council is an independent body funded by the Arts Council of England, responsible for promoting fine craftsmanship, encouraging high standards and increasing public awareness of contemporary crafts and applied arts.

American Craft Council
The American Craft Council is a national, nonprofit educational organization founded in 1943 by Aileen Osborn Webb. The mission of the Council is to champion craft.

Crafts Council of Ireland
The Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) is the main champion of the craft industry in Ireland, fostering its growth and commercial strength, communicating its unique identity and stimulating quality design, innovation and competitiveness.
