Contemporary stitches: concepts, time and process

The exhibition ‘Strikk – Masker i samtidskunsten’ (Knitting – Stitches in Contemporary Art) was on display in Gallery Format from 15 January to 13 February 2011. It focused on young contemporary artists who include knitting in their artistic practice. Norwegiancrafts interviewed three of the participating artists, Siri Berqvam, Kjersti Andvig and Kari Steihaug, on how their works explore the concept of knitting and challenge established notions of the technique and culture of knitting. Handmade Actions

DIY (Do It Yourself) is sometimes used in contemporary art to describe a handmade or homemade expression. DIY also denotes a strategy used by activists to counteract power structures in society, and can be related to punk and feminism. The theme of this text is DIY craft, a movement especially found in the USA in the last decade. While those involved in this movement may seem to be on the fringe of the art scene, it really is hard to say. Read more

Beauty and myth

It has been 25 years since Inger Johanne Rasmussen last exhibited at the National Museum of Decorative Arts (Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum) in Trondheim, Norway. Now she has returned with a solo exhibition called 'Retellings and Myths'. This time Rasmussen has collaborated with Terje Nordby – a playwright, radio celebrity and “mythologist in private practice”. The textiles themselves tell stories, but through Nordby’s reflections, they take on an added dimension. Read more
